Auto to Manual Swap Out For A 1970/1977

Post by junkman johnnie »

I just got my 1970 body on my 1977 F250 frame job done... Now I am going to make it into a manual. Right now I have a 302 and a C6. I just got a 84' 4 speed. I got all the clutch pedal stuff from a 1971 F250. Do I need to get the clutch linkage for a 1977 F250??? Or can I use what I got? I got a steering colum from a 1972 F250. So that is taken care of. Now the tranni I just got is a 4x4. Later I am going to make my 1970/1977 swap out into a foru wheel drive monster. So I am going to go ahead a install the four speed with the transfer case. That away it is already set up. I got a greeeeeeat buy on a dana 70 front end, with the gears to match my dana 60 rear end. So if anyone could give me some advise on my project monster, I would be thankful.

I didn't know they made a Dana 70 front axle. :hmm:

Yep, I believe its the same as a dana 60, but just has a bigger ring gear.

junkman johnnie, is your dana 70 a 35 spline, or 23?

If its the same as the D60 then wouldn't have either 35 or 30 spline? :hmm:

I just did a quick search for info on the Dana 70 front axle. I'm not turning up a single mention anywhere. Anyone know what they came in originally, or have more info on these? I have a D-70 dually rear in my truck, and will someday upgrade to what was going to be a D-60, but if I can get a D-70 front, thats what will go in it!

Well Mike, I did some searching and came up with a closed knuckle version and a kingpin style. Not alot of info about the specs though. Looks like the closed knuckle came in the 60 era and king pin in the late 90s. Closed knuckle being weaker then a D60 and the king pin being noted as strong or stronger then the 14 bolt. These are D70 frontends I am talking about.

Yep, something new learned today. I thought I knew it all :hmm:

Did you pull the axle and count the splines? From what I have ran into on Ford F250 D60s is they are usually 30 spline inners and outers. F350 had some 35 spline inners and all 30 spline outers. I know back then you couldn't get a 35 spline outers for the Ford D60. But you could for the Chevy D60 because of the military uses. I am sure they make 35 spline stubs now, but if not you can use the chevy stub just need to shorten in a bit.

No I have'nt checked it out yet... I just got it home tonight. It is pretty dirty. So I am going to have to clean it up later to find out what I have. I got the F6ZR-7003-CC Trani home this morning. It's out of a cobra mustang. 4.6. I am going to sell that. I can't use it.
