C4 question

C4 question
is it very hard to rebuild a c4 tranny? i have a C-4 in my truck and it doesnt work at all. is a c6 better than a c4?

Both the C4 and C6 are good transmissions, either one should be no great problem for someone with good mechanical skills. (I would liken it to rebuilding an engine) You need books and a very clean working area.
As for which is better... Better For what? The C6 is both stronger and much heavier, as such it will absorb quite a bit more power in operation.
It is all about picking the right one for the application.

Keep in mind the inherit/recall problems with the C-4. They had/have a tendancy to jump out of park into reverse. I've owned 4 or 5 through the years and my 79 as well as the 71 Chero do just that!

SOLD-71 F-350 dually flatbed, 302 / .030 over V-8 with a "baby"C-6, B & M truckshifter, Dana70/4.11 ratio, intermittent wipers, tilt steering, full LED lighting on the flat bed, and no stereo yet (this way I can hear the rattles to diagnose)! SOLD!
Many Ford bumps / one 76' EB / and several dents through the years.
A lot of "oddball" Ford parts collected from working on them for 34 years now!

well i was just wondering how hard it is to rebuild i c4 cause i just bought a truck with a c4 a 69 f100 w/240 streight 6 and i don't think c6's bolt up to it. but i think that i am going to be dropping my 390 in it and puttin an np435 behind it.

67, Not picking on C-4's but I've chased a few down the road in my time. Old age remembers the recall on them. Was there ever a recall on the C-6?pat67shorty wrote:Irrelivant. C6's did the same thing.
C4's are mildly more complicated to rebuild than a C6. The C6 is stone age simple tech.

Ah, OK, I see what you're thinking. I know it's tempting to try to use the C4 behind the FE, since you've already got it, but it just won't work...plus it probably wouldn't hold up as well as the C6 IMO. If you're considering an automatic, just bite the bullet and just get the C6 which matches the FE, and you'll be set.

the c-4 is behind the 240, but he's got a 390/np435 in his parts truck that he wants to drop in his new truck now.

And small block bell pattern C6's are far from rare if you know where to look.
Every Ford van that had a 300, 302, or 351 used one until the AOD was intorduced in the 80s. from 1973 on, truck and car trans were both long tailshaft, so they interchange.
'67 SWB, 1970 car 390, Edelbrock Streetmaster intake, MSD 6AL, 780 Holley, Hedman headers, 2.5 duals, 3.54 D44 L/S, C6.
