Advice on C6 rebuild

Post by HOWDY69 »

Now that the 410 has made it through the first 500 miles I am turning my attention to the C6. When I have it rebuilt what, if anything, special should I have done?

This is a 2WD 1969 F250 with Dana 60 4.10 rear end. Daily driver for now and hauler when I start looking for a car project. Some camping and dirt road but no 4-wheeling terrain. I have never been to the track but would not rule out the possibility. Would love to add a GV later for a 4th gear.

I want to drive this truck a long time and am not afraid to put a little money into it, within reason.

I would ask for an R servo and to have the governor lightened to increase the WOT shift point.

Stock converter or "fuelmaster" should work great with your cam.

Thanks for the info. I finally got the nerve to check the WOT 2nd to 3rd shift point on the freeway onramp. It is now at 65 mph which by my calculations is about 4100 RPM.

Man this engine sure runs smooth at the higher RPM's. I can see how people get attached to a well built well balanced engine.

Hey Duckryder have you installed a new torque converter yet. If so which one and how do you like it.

I have an ATI FuelMaster "HighStall" to go in it. I've got a few home projects to finish up before I can put it in, and it is hail season so I may get deployed, but if all goes well I'll get it in in the next few weeks as well.

Jay at Broader is a good guy, might even be worth shipping it to him, He is in Texas now.

Get a "460" core for an F250. Steal all the clutch drums and planets
out of it and use them for your rebuild. Get a shift kit. Transgo is the best
out there. Replace all the bushings in the drums and planets. Ck the grooves
on the pump where the sealing rings go. Very important! Replace the
converter with a clean one. Just basic's, but the more you know the
better. Good luck, KeithP

Transtar has some of the best kits out there for transmission overhaul, and their converters are great! HD truck converters have some nice upgrades for great strength and dont cost an arm and a leg for performance that matches that of the "high performance" brands.

The racing clutches are of no use in a daily driver cause they dont last nearly as long, but a good rebuild is key to making a good transmission. A quality shift kit can really improve the characteristics of a transmission and to pick the right stuff it's key to match it to the rest of the vehicle.

Took the truck to AAMCO today. They said it would take them 2 hours to do a diagnostics and $50 and they were closing in an hour so I should come back another day.

Next I went to the local transmission shop, Red D. They took it for a test drive for free. I told them the C6 had a whine. After he drove it he said it was more like a "whir" and was just the planetary gears.

How loud are your C6's?

Oh and stay away for AAmco.

Half the cars at AAMCO don't need a new transmission... But they get one anyway...

:yt: Nothing but horror stories about AAMCO out there. :x

I can't hear my C6, but maybe that's because of the glass packs.

I'll add to the antI-AAMCO voices...I have been told I needed a very expensive rebuild by them, when all I needed was a modulator. It pays to get second opinions, do a little research.
