Would that be anything like the Lucas Tranny treatment? You know the red stuff that takes 3-4 hours to pour a quart in? If that's what you are talking about, it's in there for the past 100+ miles...

I'm bout ready to put a 4 speed gear slammer in :x

Tranny stop slips do hurt the transmission in the long run. Since they soften seals beyond normal, they cause accelerated wear and are most noticable for causing servo seal failure. From the sounds of it though the tranny is worn out and the direct clutch is getting ready to call it quits.

The only thing I can think of that you have left to do is adjust the bands, unless you've done so already. I wouldn't mess with the low/reverse but might consider adjusting the intermediate? band. Don't know what the specs are for yours. Just make sure if you do to do exactly as it says. These adjustments are sometimes in inch pounds, not foot/lbs. Also, it's better to get it close than to exceed the specs. Sometimes over tightening or tightening a worn band too much will cause it to break. You'll have to make the call on this one. It may cure or kill your trans. Good Luck!

I've got this on my to-do list. I'm in the process of tackling issues on the 99 F150. I have to get both trucks registered this friday. I'll post up after I try the band adjustment. After that, I'll just drive it til it dies and go from there.

Well, I hope to start doing the tear down for the full resto later this year. That is after the new house is built with my 3 car garage. I figure when I have it back to a rolling chassis, I can swap an AOD in. My buddy with a 69 F100 picked up a rebuildable AOD for $50. It's supposedly an earlier model AOD that doesn't require all the cpu stuff. I don't know much about them, so it's time to do some research....

Congrats on fixing the 99'.   Been dealing with my own problems with our 96' Dodge Ram. I know, different religion. But I have managed to get 185,000 miles out of her without major work; well, what I consider to be major. Anyway, I've heard good things about the AOD swap. You would probably want to with the non-cpu ones. I think they were 1986 and older trucks, but you'd have to check for sure. I believe these had the 4th gear but no torque converter lock-up. Still, better than a 1:1 ratio. Also, these came with a D,2,1 pattern, not an OD,D,2,1. This is a big reason why 5.0 Mustang people don't usually like them. With a cooler however, they can be plenty stout.

PS This is foggy territory for me. If the car and truck AOD's are different, some stuff may not apply. Do your homework to make sure.

the main thing I don't like about the aod is the REALLY tall first and overdrive gears. they are good for gas mileage, but it'll feel doggy compared to what you had.

Thanks.

Backing up here.... Someone asked early on in this post if it's any different cold than hot. I have noticed it does slip more when cold. Once the engine gets up to temp, it doesn't slip as badly.

I still haven't gotten time to try the band adjustment. I hope to get that done this weekend.

Mine would slip a little when cold, but when the temp drops to about 20 degrees and colder, it gets quite ridiculous. You could shift it into drive or reverse and until you waited a couple seconds or increased the RPM's, it was as though you were in neutral. Engagement would be harsh and slight slipping going from 2nd/3rd. Would improve and almost stop when up to temp. At temps over freezing, I never really had any problems and it shifts nice considering it's age.

I'm by no means a trans expert, but I'm guessing my internal components/seals are considerably warn (many, many miles). Up here the cold gets so extreme that seals, fluids, even metals contract making them smaller and rock hard; or really brittle. I'm pretty sure shrinkage of components and/or "jello" trans fluid is the culprit. Maybe this will shed some light on your situation.

a lot of c-6's had the problem of not going in gear when they were cold due to old, hard seals. once the thing warmed up a little, it wasn't a problem and did not cause driveability issues. just a minor incovenience is all. just curious, when was the fluid last changed?
