Forgot about the cap too. Guess it's because mine had a "custom, Mr. Potato Head, back yard built shaft w/extended splines (about twice as long as stock). 
Of course it failed. Was ridiculously expensive to have a new 2-piece built due to the fact I couldn't find a replacement at the time. Also meant heat the slip yoke a little, not the splines if you can avoid it.
