While I don't have a lot (er...any) experience with 4WD trannies, here's what I can tell you.

There are two basic styles of 4x4 trannies....'married' (transmissions with the transfer case bolted directly to the back of the tranny) and 'divorced' ( the transfer case is separate from the tranny, with a short driveshaft connecting the two).

What engine do you currently have and is your setup 'married' or 'divorced'?

To the best of my knowledge: all F100's and F150's used the married transfer case. All F250's used the divorced t-case untill 1977. 1977-79 switched to the married also. When converting to an automatic, the tail housing is usually replaced with a spacer/adapter and bolted to the transfer case. You can convert a 2wd trans to a 4wd, but you are usually better off to start by finding an automatic/t-case assembly. That way you don't have to worry about converting anything or finding the small necessary parts to make it work.

By the way, if getting an assembly, be sure to get the crossmembers, shifter components, and the driveshafts. Sometimes there is a difference and it will save you money down the road.

But why?
Great ideas have always encounter violent opposition from mediocre minds.
