under hood paint

Post by fordman »

other than hand sanding the heck out of the under side of the hood. how would a person be able to get the spot you couldn't reach in the skeleton of the hood rough enough for paint ot stick. if i end up with a different hood from a donor i will want to repaint it the color of my truck.

Have it "dipped" or media blasted would be my best guess. Anyone else?? If you wanted to be really thorough and those are not options you can break/cut the welds of the inner and outer hood pieces... sand them down paint em seperate, grind the edges and weld them back together.. I don't suggest that one, but it is an option.

As always, just my :2cents: ,

Or you can do what someone did with my truck, and undercoat the underside of the hood. :hmm:

careful blasting the hood. I screwed up a perfectly straight hood trying to sand blast. I was being ultra careful, to only shoot the structure...but a small amount of silica did hit the inside of the outerskin...everwhere this happened I ended u with a oil-can dip. Ticked me off.

What kind of sandblaster and what PSI were you using? I've heard of sheetmetal warpage with dual-stage 175PSI units, but not with the smaller Harbor Freight type of sandblaster. I've got one hooked up to a 13CFM single-stage compressor and actual blasting pressure is normally between 70-80 PSI and have had no problems blasting sheetmetal.

i was told i could use a adhesion accelorator under it to make it stil but it wasn't much also a scotch brite pad on a stick i just don't want to have a blue spot showing anywhere under the hood. i would rather have paint. i want an original look to my truck.

They make a cup blaster that only takes a cup full of sand hench the name. IT works great for tedious or metal under the hood.

SEM products makes an areosol called sand free. Klean-Strip also makes a similar product called bulldog. These are used to adhere paint where you cannot sand, such as adoor jamb or inner hood sections.
