oil flow

Post by jf100 »

I am rebuilding a 302. Have engine in frame and trying to make sure I have oil moving up to the heads. I have a tool that attaches to a drill
and tried rotating and not get anything coming up to the heads. How long should I run the drill before I see anything? I made sure the oil pump was
working when I put it into the block during the build and it was pumping. Thanks for any information.

It shouldn't take too long , do you have the drill running in reverse??
That's the way the distributor turns .

yes I did ran it for about 45 seconds. Did not see any oil in the head that had value cover off. Have to set the timing mark that is why the value cover was off also. Any ideas what it could be??

Did you feel resistance build up as it was turning? Starts easy and gets stiffer? Not to state the obvious but are you sure the shaft was the right size and firmly seated in the oil pump? https://www.stangnet.com/mustang-forums ... mp.800103/

Sometimes the pump doesn't prime itself very well. I've seen them take a couple of minutes to get resistance when the oil starts to flow. The o-ring could be damaged and not letting it prime. One other thing. About 25 years ago "a friend of mine" tried for 5 minutes to prime the oil pump but figured out there has to be oil in the pan first. I, I mean he, hasn't done that since

yes I made sure that oil was in first before priming the pump. I have to go out and give it another go plus do some more work to get it running.
