240 carb base gasket
ok it seems like the autolite 1 barrel is not sealing good on the manifold. when I spray ether in that area it idles much slower. now trying to find another gasket, I see 1 to 3 required. could this be my problem? I only put 1 on it when I rebuilt the carb. I did notice that there were more than 1 when I cleaned up the old gaskets and put the new one on. I just thought whoever did that years ago didn't take them off. sounds like they knew more than me....thanks

Re: 240 carb base gasket
I've never seen ANY carb require three gaskets sandwiched together to seal the flanges UNLESS there is something wrong with the mating surfaces?
Maybe pull it back apart and check for flatness on the halves, (you can easily plane the manifold and the base of the carb back flat yourself taking care to seal off the plenum and the carb throat from the filings). Your on the right track with the ether as it's my "go to" carb tool. Lot of guys use carb cleaner for leak checking but I'd found it tends to leave a residue where the ether completely evaporates.

im going to pull it back off and do what you said. that spring loaded flapper inside was staying closed for quite awhile before I finally realized the spring was jammed up. it would get really hot in there I noticed and that may have warped the base. not sure just thinking

Re: 240 carb base gasket
A little trick I use when the carb won't seal. Clean all surfaces. Dip your finger in some motor oil and smear it lightly on the intake. Lay a thin bead of gas resistant RTV around the flange. https://www.autozone.com/sealants-glues ... 166684_0_0 Place the gasket. Do the same on the bottom of the carb and install. Tighten firmly. Seems to work well for me and the motor oil makes the gasket easier to remove in the future.
