240 exhaust

Post by 67 short box »

thinking about changing the stock exhaust manifold on the mighty 240 to a two piece 3 in 1 setup for true dual exhaust like ultra ranger did on his.

what do I do where the intake and exhaust come together under the carburetor? i know its really useless on that small engine, but i just like dual exhaust. never had a straight 6 before. i found a good deal on some new ford manifolds, just wondering what im getting myself into

thanks

The later efi ‘’split’’exhaust manifolds that came on the 300, inline-six engines will give better exhaust flow and thus increased power to the motor. It fits right together with the stock intake manifold. It’s a good upgrade.
I don’t think making a ‘true dual’ exhaust gives you any added benefit.

The 240 is a good motor, and can give you some ‘zip’ if it’s in good condition and set up right.

I thought you were talking about the efi split manifolds. What are the new Ford manifolds you’re referring to?

Here’s a pic of the efi split manifolds

they look like yours
is there a difference between efi and non efi manifolds?

The Ford 300 I-6 went to fuel injection in 1987 thru 1996. That’s when they used the split manifolds for the exhaust.
They bolt right onto the earlier 240’s and 300 I-6 and give a lot better exhaust flow.
The earlier ones are squared off and more restrictive.

You can take a gander at this forum for all the good info;

Should be able to salvage some downpipes from a junkyard or buy new since the cats bolted to the downpipes. You'll still want some sort of carb heat to help the fuel atomize if you drive it in the cold.

is the carb heat a must? I think it probably is. what about after the engine warms up? I wonder if anyone makes a custom piece for this?
thanks for the info

It acts up in the 40-degree range if you don’t have the heat applied to the bottom of the carb.

I used the fuel injection manifolds on mine. I sourced them from a local junk yard. For 20 bucks I got the manifolds along with the 2 down pipes. I only used about a foot of the down pipes just to get me started with running true dual exhaust. I cannot attest really what the fuel injection manifolds alone gave me power wise because the same time I did that I swapped in a cam. What I will say is its good and loud going into 2.5 inch cherrybombs and exiting just last the cab. As for the intake manifold heat here is a link to the intake manifold heater I used. Truthfully I thought it was a bit pricey but it was well made and works really well. I do not know if it fits the stock manifold or not cause im running a 4 barrel manifold but I would imagine it would because my 4 barrel used to be bolted to the stock log style exhaust manifold. Either way I would call them and make sure if u go this route. Here is the link hope it helps. http://autoparts.rasoenterprises.com/in ... rd-240-300
