fuel tank selector

Hello!
I have a 1972 F250 camper (390cid) with dual fuel tanks , and it has the selector valve by the seat as showed in photo. But the text on the valve is worn and I cant see what tank the selector is pointing at. Can anyone help? On the picture I think it is positioned against the aux tank, but I am not sure since I just bought the car.
I am planning to change the fuel pump. Will the fuel from the tank leak out when I disconnect the fuel line from the pump? There is probably a good idea to put the fuel tank selector in "off" position while doing this?

Knut,

To my knowledge no one reproduces the plate that ID's which tank the knob is pointed at.
I got used to feeling the very distinctive "click" it makes when you turn it from one tank to the other when switching tanks. As far as knowing which tank your valve is on you should be able to watch your gas gauge for that particular tank go down-then mark the plate somehow, (I used a paint marker on mine). You could also have a new plate made using the old one as a template and have it permanently engraved.

You'll have to make your own like I did - searched everywhere and couldn't find one especially for mine which has 3 tanks. I'll post a photo of mine tomorrow before I go to work!

I have three tanks as well (although only the in-cab tank is currently plumbed). For the dash gauge, a PO installed a rotary switch with a "rooster" switch, like you have on a guitar amp (the decent, retro ones, anyway). One of these days, I'll have to get it all working together.

Ok...now that I had 2 seconds to do this here's a shot of the selector plate i made for my switch.....

It's aluminium about 2 inches wide by 2 1/2 inches long and I used the switch as a template for the holes - put the letters on with a set of stamps i have - sprayed it flat black and used red model paint for the letters thinned out enough so it would flow and could easily wipe off any excess. The switch itself is from Tom's Bronco Parts in Oregon - the only place I found that sells a 3 way switch but can also be used for a dual tank setup - one of the outlets comes with a cap on it. Hope this helps......

You're lucky enough to be able to use your gage on all three......the 2 add on tanks on mine are the "oh s@#& I gotta switch tanks" type which makes it interesting when running down a 4 lane.........
