Just bought myself a 1972 F250 with the 390cid engine. I have a little safety question that I hope you will help me with.
The car has at some point swapped the old carburator for a replacement Holley and they probably had to cut the metal fuel line in order to fit the new carb. The attached picture shows the 3 inch rubber line that goes into the carb. Is this a common and safe way to to this? The metal line is cut straight and the rubber hose is just attached with two clamps. I am a little bit nervous when it comes to a gasoline leak in this area..
I dont have the tools to make flares. Is there another quick fix for this?
Thanks

Re: fuel line
Many will disagree but I would never have a rubber line on the pressure side of the fuel pump. I would make a new fuel line out of metal. Buy a cheap flaring tool and a tube bender, I'm sure Harbor Freight probably has them. Or you could make just a replacement end and connect it to the old line with a compression union.

Re: fuel line
I agree completely with Busboy. Get a metal line on there ASAP. Most auto parts stores will loan you a flaring tool for free.

Re: fuel line
You should also have a fuel filter screwed into the carb where that rubber hose is connected. Ford made it by design and is so...much better than an inline fuel filter with more clamps to chance leaking. Like busboy said above I'd start at the fuel pump and re-work a new steel line leading up to a new fuel filter that's screwed into the carb, (but yes you'll have to use a short piece of rubber hose to connect the filter).

Re: fuel line
Your fuel pump should have a filter bowl on it, but if not - then you will want the filter that screws into the carburetor, which will require a small length of rubber hose.

Hello again!
Another question,
My fuelpump has a bowl with a filter in. Is it this enough or do you recommend a fuel filter at the inlet base on the carb as well?
The fuelfilter on the pump look big and good to me.

Re: fuel line
after reading this, I went to town and got me a steel line for mine. my store had them already made in 30 or 40 inch lengths 5/16 dia.
easy job, should have done it sooner. just get the correct connections for the pump and carb and done...

Re: fuel line
Ford used the bowl filters alone on the engines that had them. No other filter was needed.khnaess wrote:Hello again!
