Need Help ID'ing Old Camshaft Profile

Post by colnago »

I disassembled my old FE, and can't find any info to describe the cam profile. It has CRANE stamped in one end, and ^J2068 stamped in the other end. Initially, I thought it was AJ2068, but there's no "cross-bar" in the letter A. Most likely, I probably won't reuse this cam  , but I'm curious as to what was in my truck.

Anyone have an old Crane catalog?

Is there nothing else on the end with “crane”? It should have a grind number.

Any paint markings?

I didn't see it until you mentioned it (it's very faint), but there is another stamping in the end that says "Crane." It says "8-2-NC". On the other end, it also says "782 S C".

No paint anywhere that I could see.

Look close in front of the “8-2-NC” that looks like the end of a grind number like

“H-278-2-NC” Use bright light.

BTW, Cranes website has either gone to heck or it doesn’t like safari or firefox as everything says “no results found”...

I have found all sorts of markings for crane cams cruising google today, but ...

Maybe "286-2-NC," or "288-2-NC." I can't see anything before that, though. If that's the grind number, then I'll start doing some searching. I figured that the 2068 was the grind number, since it's so much more prominent.

288 is a valid grind, but I don’t think it should be followed by -2 in that case (344341) I don’t see a 286 grind but that doesn’t mean they never made one.

You could try chalk or a sharpie to try to bring the numbers up...

Seems Crane has marked them in many different manners over the years according to google... You might give them a call I suppose the other numbers could help them ID it. It should have a date code on it somewhere too...

No history on the engine I suppose?
