Which engine
So...I have a 70 F250 Camper special Custom Explorer special. The engine presently in it has a casting # of 27 DIF and is locked up, I do have a complete 390 or 391 casting #s block D4TE heads C6AE-R and intake D4TE9425-CB , I also have C8AE-H heads and a C8AE9425-AA. S manifold. Should I just rebuild the D4TE motor?

Re: Which engine
If it were me, I would rebuild the D4TE block (since it's already out of the truck), and use the C8AE-H heads, and the "S" manifold. If you want it to sing at higher RPMs, I'd probably think of a different intake, but I'm an old fogey, and I keep the RPMs under 3K. But I recently rebuilt my 352, and I think I have a lot of mismatches (mostly a poor decision on the cam), so I'm looking at a partial rebuild myself (cam, lifters, springs, maybe intake).

The intake on it is a 4bbl, although the #s point to a 391 I don't believe it came out of a big truck. It doesn't have rams horn exhaust, only one thermostat, its possible someone made it a 390. I've read that ford used these blocks for light trucks as 390s.

Re: Which engine
The number cast on a lot of FE blocks are useless when it comes to figuring out what they were.
The D4 block has a heavier main web and is a sought after block
C8AE-H heads are garden variety FE heads with small intake ports
C6AE-R heads are also garden variety heads But they have larger intake ports

Re: Which engine
Got the motor on the engine stand, going to tear it down tomorrow. I also found the word SPECIAL cast on the right side and a brass tag on the left E91420.

Re: Which engine
2U crank, C7AE-B Rods, #7 cylinder had something bouncing around in it, cyl wal is good piston and combustion chamber not so much.
Think I'm going to use the C8 heads and intake, maybe do the CJ porting and bigger valves.
