Hi everyone,
I’ve been having issues with a fuel smell and white smoke coming from my tailpipes and I ran a compression test yesterday. My results ranged from 109-119. Changed the plugs and did an oil change today. Let it run for a bit and then drove it around the block a few times. Still getting the smoke. The fuel smell is less than before but still present.
At this point I don’t know what else I can check. I didn’t do a wet test because my results were all within 10%. Any ideas on what to do next or what the cause could be?
4 plugs on the right side (5-8) were a bit rusty from the outside and I believe wayyyy older than the 4 on the left. I believe the person that owned the truck before me only changed 4 for some reason. All plugs were blackish/wet and some were a little sooty. I can post pics if it helps.
The only thing I know for sure is I didn’t have power running on my choke for a little while (I guess it got ripped off sometime) so I drove it around 100 miles fully open. That’s why I believe the last time I did an oil change my oil was black within 100 miles.
Thanks,
Raj

So if there was not any power going to the Choke then it was mostly CLOSED which means very rich.
Did the oil smell like fuel?
If the choke is fixed, fuel smell means leaks or carburetor issues.
White smoke is usually antifreeze once it is warmed up.
What does the smoke smell like (sweet?)
110is sounds pretty low for compression, I would do a wet test to see if it comes up (and to determine if the choke washed down the cylinder walls)
302’s didn’t come in 68’s did they? give us some details on the engine...

From what I know the guy before the guy I bought it from put in a 302 in and a C6 Transmission in like 2007. The guy says that it only has 5,000 miles on both. I’ll run a wet test as well. Here’s a link to my topic about my truck there’s more info there.DuckRyder wrote:So if there was not any power going to the Choke then it was mostly CLOSED which means very rich.

It doesn’t really smell sweet I thought about it being coolant as well. There was a little bit of water dripping out of the tailpipes but my truck was also parked for about 2 months. I’m going to drive it a bit more today to see what happens.
There is power going to my choke I did test with a volt meter yesterday.

I had a leaky master cylinder suck fluid thru the booster into intake. It white smoked. Also check your oil to make sure fuel pump diaphragm isn't leaking into crankcase. Do you have good spark ? Typically those carbs are super lean unless something is wrong.

I’ll run a wet test soon just got busy with work these past few days. But I did an oil change only about 3.25 quarts came out and 5 went in. It’s odd though cause I checked my dipstick last month and it was still above the fill line. When I put 4 quarts in this time it was all the way at the bottom. When I added the last quart it was in the top half of the fill line.
