460 to 390 flywheel swap
Hello Fordsters! I have a '76 460 with a manual transmission and a '68 390 with an automatic and flex plate. Will the 460 manual flywheel work on the 390? I believe the 460 is internally balanced. Thanks!

The short answer is NO!
A 390 is an "FE" engine, a 460 is a "385" series engine.
These two engine series share no major parts..........

Maybe. First, the 460 was not available with a manual transmission in 1976 so who knows what your flywheel came from--it could actually be a 390 flywheel. Second, lots of 460 swaps with manual transmissions have been done using a 351M/400 truck bell housing, diaphragm clutch, and a 390 flywheel. I personally believe the L&L flywheel for 460 swaps would be a better choice than the 390 flywheel but many people don't agree because they can get their hands on a used 390 flywheel for a lot less $$$.
James is correct that 390's and 460's are from different engine families and almost nothing is interchangeable. The flywheel is a bit of a grey area. They both require zero balance flywheels (up to mid-1979 for a 460) and have the same crankshaft bolt pattern.
