Help With Oil Leak

Post by Cal2121 »

I have a rebuilt (about 3K miles on it) 390 in my 68 F-250 CS. I am getting a small amount of oil that collects on the bottom of the starter. It's small enough that it seems to only drip intermittently and is burned off (without much smell at all) when it hits the exhaust. While it's small, it is driving me nuts given that it was recently built. I've changed the valve covers from stamped to cast and changed the valve cover gaskets. I do not see or feel any oil coming from underneath the valve cover. I also do not see or feel any oil at the rear of the engine where the intake seals to the block and heads, or evidence of a leak on the bell housing.. I think (seeking input now) I can see a bit of oil wetness right at area where the head and block mate (with a bolt) at the rear of the engine right by the starter.

I have a few questions:

1) Is it possible to have a leak from between the block and head at the location noted above? If so, should I just retorque (or tell my engine guy to recheck this area)?

2) Any other places I should check for a leak?

Thank you in advance for any help and input.

On a FE the crack between the head and intake or the intake valley corners are notorious leakers. It's possible you have a rear main leak that's getting splashed up on the starts but I'd expect the bell housing would be leaking first.

Thanks Ranchero. I'll check the intake valley corners again. I think I will let it run in place and get underneath to see if I can see where the oil is coming from.
