Need Help Removing Camshaft

Post by colnago »

Stupid question of the day. I put in a rebuilt in my truck last October, and am in the process of disassembling the old engine. I removed the cam thrust plate on the front of the block, but the camshaft won't pull out. I applied a little pressure with a prybar, but it only seemed to bind the camshaft to where it couldn't turn. With the rebuild, I just slid the new crankshaft in, and put on the thrust plate on the front. What am I missing? Do some blocks use a retention bolt at the rear, under that end plate?

Should pull right out, maybe some varnish on the unworn area of the bearings.

:yt:

Make sure you have all the lifters out of their bore, (not binding on a lobe) and it should slide out.
I'd used a "body hammer" type puller before to get past the varnish lip that busboy described before.

Lifters out as well as the distributor...

Then use a long water pump bolt as a handle to remove it.

Well, I got it. It just needed a little encouragement. I just needed to make sure I wasn't prying on something that I shouldn't.

Thanks!
