Stock exhaust question

Post by Ohiotinkerer »

Been considering what direction i want to go with my exhaust and leaning seriously toward the stock setup (I know - I have my reasons) and what I'm finding is a 2 1/2 inch inlet and a 2 inch outlet muffler is what is listed for my 360 FE - just doesn't sound right to me but is that how it came from the factory?............. :?

From the exhaust manifold, 2-inch tubes merged into a single 2-inch tube, into a long muffler, and a single 2-inch tail pipe exiting behind the right rear tire.

One of the laws of thermodynamics is as a gas cools it requires less space to convey the same energy. I think Ford was just being cheap back in the day but they are doing it with the new 5.0 engines. Cat pipe is big, then smaller pipe after the cats then a little larger at the muffler for sound quality.

Just make sure you do it in mandrel bent pipe and not the crinkly bent crap from an exhaust shop.

That's where I'm running into confusion because the y pipe from the manifold to the muffler is 2 1/2 inch and believe it or not could be original........it has 82,500 original miles and came from Idaho so it's never seen salt or humidity.........or the guy that owned it took it back to the dealer to have it serviced - it had a Ford water pump on it that wasn't painted so I know it's been replaced but most people don't buy OEM parts......I've been looking at Walker replacement pieces because of what I've seen coming out of our muffler shops around here and I don't like it....

I've enjoyed using Walker replacement exhaust parts from the manifolds to the tailpipe. They fit good and I can do it my way regarding the hangars etc. Muffler shop monkeys just throw crap together and don't care how it looks.
