Visiting a friend who owns an original 78. We were talking about wether or not it should have a new 4 barrel manifold and carb?
Thoughts? Suggestions?

If it's all stock you could put on a 600 ish cfm 4 bbl , but I would consider a 500 cfm 2bbl and save some money. :2cents:

No, '78's are about as anemic as they can be and still run. I'd do a later 351w or 460 EFI swap before thinking about changing the carb on a 400. Much better return on your investment.

Depends on how deep your pocketbook is, and what you're expecting. My '67 with a 352 has a 4BBL, with an Edelbrock 1405 (600CFM, manual choke). Currently has a 4BBL "T" intake from the mid-70s, but I'm thinking about going back to the "S" intake from the mid-60s. Great combo, but I don't get the "wow-you-gotta-get-a-4BBL-cuz-it-gives-you-mega-power-and-is-great-on-gas-if-you-stay-out-of-the-secondaries" that everyone talks about. If you use a Ford 4BBL intake, don't spend over $50.

A magic recipe for a 400 is a 351C timing chain from 1970. The Edelbrock 4v intake, and these http://www.ausfordparts.com/ausheads.html
They're closed chambered for more compression. You do that and I promise you that 400 will tow a single wide up the Santiam Pass at 70 without breaking a sweat. Plus it will be fun lol. :D
