Cam bearing question Ford 390

Post by turbotimmer »

After having my 68 390 rebuilt, I found a bunch of metal in the oil pan after only a few minutes of run time. Long story short, I found the cam to be really tight in the block. Tried replacing the cam bearings as it looks like the first guy beat em in with a chisel. Still tight. The new comp cam had around .004" runout. Bought another new cam. Still tight. Question is, does somebody offer oversize cam bearings for this motor? Search after search online has come up empty. I found a guy that can line bore the cam journals, but I'm not spending another penny on this thing unless I can find the bearings.

Thanks in advance.

If you have an old FE cam

You can make a tool that will help

Take the old cam and cut a notch on the journal

If you look dead at the tail end of the cam shaft like a clock

Cut the groove to start at 2 and stop at 12

Install it in the bearing and rotate the cam in direction of travel

Might sound crude but I can guarantee that most machine shops have the same tool

Sorry for the late response. It’s like my machine shop read your directions, because that’s exactly what they did. They actually used the first comp cam I had in it after the rebuild since I tossed the factory one long ago. The new one goes in nice and spins easy.

Thanks for the reply.
