Engine Identification

Post by thatoneguy »

Ok, I am a bit confused right now.

I have a '70 F100 4x4 that I am in the process of a today swap on (my 4x2 body on the 4x4 frame). I will be keeping the motor/trans from the 4x4 as the 302 from the 4x2 is going in my Maverick. I know absolutely nothing about the motor so I tore it down and it looks like the motor is a recent rebuild. It is in very good shape so I am planning to just hone and re-ring with new bearings, seals, and freeze plugs.

The problem I am having is trying to identify the motor. According to the VIN and the seller it should be a 360. I was too gung-ho to get it torn down and did not do my research first, figuring I could verify this from a casting #,
etc. ...lesson learned.

This all started when I was checking the pistons for any markings and decided to search the 'C7AE-B' mark on the rods. I found this site: http://www.erareplicas.com/427man/engine/partnums.htm which listed the rods as for a 428. Digging more I found the crank is marked '2UA' which is a 390 crank according to that page. My heads are marked 'C8AE-H' which doesn't appear to be listed.

Based on this info, it looks to me like I have a 390, hoping someone with a bit more knowledge can confirm that.

If that is the case, from what I can find, the only real difference will be the crank and rods. For what I am doing (rings, bearings, seals, oil pump, lifters, push rods), do I even really need to worry about whether it is a 360 or a 390?

Any help is appreciated.

Other than personal curiosity, doesn't matter. If it runs good, who cares. Would be kind of nice when someone asks what you've got in her, you actually knew. Not an FE expert but you can tell the difference by measuring the stroke of the pistons.

2UA crank is a 390

The rods are common FE rods used in everything except the 352/360/427 nothing special

All plain jane FE engines share the same common
bearings
oil pumps
timing chains
pushrods
oil pans
water pumps
valve covers
gaskets
dampners
lifters

Perfect, these were exactly the responses I was hoping for...and quick too...thanks! At this stage my main concern was wether it would complicate things for getting parts, glad to hear it shouldn't.

This is the first FE engine I've dove into so my knowledge is limited but growing now. Looks like sometime in the last 48 years, someone swapped in a 390 (or just swapped the rotating assembly). Will double check stroke when it is back together so I know.

It's a 390 swapped in or built up 360-390 is easy crank rod piston swap. She will be a good runner once your get her done!
