Pretty sure this isn't right.
Once had a truck with a 390. Engine self destructed. Went and got it up to the house to pull the 4x4 oil pan off of it. Found this:

Re: Pretty sure this isn't right.
Pretty common when the valve seals clog up the oil pump
Take the screen off your oil pump pickup
it has a crossbar on it
under the crossbar is a gaping 5/8 hole
when the screen gets clogged
it sucks the screen up and bits and pieces
of the valve seal get sucked up into the pump and lock it up

Suction won't lock it up but a little piece of crap sucked through the screen will. Also negligent revving of the engine with really cold oil runs the risk of twisting the drive. Worth it to install a heavy duty oil pump drive next time. Also, high volume, not high pressure pump.

Re: Pretty sure this isn't right.
valve stem seals is exactly what i thought when i took apart the oil pump and found pieces of what looks like plastic. i cant see how it would get thru the screen, the pickup tube doesnt come apart. i will look harder to see if the screen is loose or something, since i want to reuse it.

Re: Pretty sure this isn't right.
The screen is crimped into the bell
The cross bar is covering the hole
Do yourself a favor and buy a new pickup
Uncrimp the screen and you will see the hole in the screen
I have replaced the screen with one without the hole
I never said suction will clog the oil pump
what I said was the screen gets clogged
When that happens suction raises the screen off the cross bar and allows the pieces of valve seal to enter the oil pump
The pump locks up and twists the oil pump drive shaft
The plastic pieces you found were hardened valve seal material

Re: Pretty sure this isn't right.
I don't see any cross bar or hole, and can't seem to find a replacement. Please advise.

Re: Pretty sure this isn't right.
I see how it works now. Screen gets clogged, screen gets sucked up, uncovers hole, craps get in.
Can't seem to find a new one, but screen is clean. Reuse?
This is a highboy oil pan/pickup tube.

Re: Pretty sure this isn't right.
undo the crimp around the edge and clean the screen out. Get yourself a arp oil pump driveshaft.
Just another Ford fool named Dan.
