Gas Tank Questions

Post by 390FE1972 »

I just pulled my gas tank out of my 1972 F250 and there were no rubber/cork rectangular cushions on the cab floor where the gas tank sits. My question is how many of these cushions were used under the bottom of the in cab tank? I have some that I picked up from a junk yard, but am unsure how many were used and where they were placed under the tank. Another question I have is about gas tank size on a F350 vs. a F250. I pulled a tank from a 1971 F350 and it is a 1/2" wider than the tank I took out of my 1972. The thing I first noticed is that on the F350 tank there are five jute padding strips on the back vs. three on the F250 tank. Just curious if its just a manufactures difference or a difference because it is from an F350. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

The tanks changed in 70'. This was from my knowledge the venting system for the emissions . The 61-70 was 18.5 and the 71-72 tank was 18.5. May be wrong on this but to my knowledge the difference was the emissions changes. The straps a such was the increased security measures to keep the tank stable in the cab just like the side marker lights upgraded on the 71-72 trucks. :2cents:

Are you talking gallons? My '67 has a 20-gallon tank (non-vented). The saddle tank is 25 gallons (I think). Or, are you talking inches?

To 390FE1972, you can check LMC Trucks. They should show different things for different years.

Thanks for the replies! I did some measurements on my F250 vs. the in cab tank from the 1971 F350 and they appear to be the same gallon capacity as the measurements are all the same except the width of the outside flat edge where the holes are for the attachment bolts. The bolt holes all match up with the cab bolts in my F250. The only other differences are the indentations on the back of the tank for five jute padding pads on the F350 tank vs. the three indentations for the jute padding on the F250 tank. There is also an extra hole on both sides of the outside flat edge for attaching the two bottom bolts. Everything else is exactly the same on both tanks, so it must have been a difference from the tank suppliers. That's
the only thing that makes sense.
