Need help wiring ‘71 460 in a ‘79 F100
Please help. I’m not good at wiring, so I will need specifics if you can help. I swapped the 460 engine/trans out of a ‘71 Lincoln Continental and dropped them in a ‘79 F100. I can’t get the engine to run right. I’m pretty sure I didn’t wire something correctly. Can someone walk through how to wire this engine to the ‘79 chassis? Do I use all the existing ignition boxes and components in the engine bay of the ‘79, or does the ‘71 motor not need these? The ‘71 460 still has a points distributor. If I need to bypass all the electrical boxes/components in the engine bay because the ‘71 points motor doesn’t need all that, can anyone walk me through how to exactly do that? Thanks

So is the 79 a 460 already? (In other words, do you have a duraspark distributor to fit the 460?)
The electronic ignition will not work without the correct distributor, my advice would be to use one in the 460 which should make the whole thing plug and play.
If not should help to wire the points distributor, but you’re going to have to figure out where to pick the power up and if it has a resistor or not.

If you have the 79' with all the duraspark box and all the wiring in it set it up that way don't keep the points. If your don't have a distributor just simply go order one for a 79 ford f250 f350 with a 460 and drop it in time it up.

Thanks for the help. Please keep it coming. No, the ‘79 f100 came with a 302 that I sold. I will check out the diagram. So you think that a Duraspark 460 distributor might work? I do remember one of the boxes under the hood on the deiver’s side was melted some from my mis-wiring, so I might need to replace that if I’m going to try and use everything under the hood.

Is there an aftermarket brand of distributor that you would recommend? Or a parts store that you prefer? Or are these Ford parts? This is my first older ford obviously, so I need advice.
Thanks
Thanks

I hope this doesn’t offend anyone, but would an HEI version complicate this situation or help?

Sorry, I have lots of questions. Since I tried using a points distributor and coil, i might have changed a couple wires under the hood. Could you please attach a diagram showing how things should be wired for a ‘79 pickup with a 460, with duraspark?
Thanks a lot

Once you have the electronic ignition distributor in the ignition is plug n play. The ignition box has a plug that attaches to a harness. That harness has 2 round plugs on it, a 4 prong and a 2 prong. You should have a similar plug on your harness that comes thru the firewall on your driver side inner fender, 2 prong. The electronic ignition distributor also has a similar plug, 3 prong. There's an intermediate harness with a 3 prong plug on one end and a 4 prong on the other. Just plug them all together.https://www.google.com/search?q=duraspa ... AnM:&isa=y and here's what it all looks like
