Hey guys first post and have been lurking on here for a while. I promise I used the search button and you tube but I still can't get this right.
I have a 68 with the 240 i6 and carter yf carburetor. Everything was working and I died out. My fuel pump went out and I replaced it. Pretty sure it was the ethanol since the rubber diaphragm was inside the filter. I replaced that and low and behold all the extra pressure and my carb was leaking. Got the rebuild kit and that is done.
Now to the problem: I can get the carb tuned and motor running strong without my oil bath air cleaner on but can't tune the carb after putting it back on. I have thoroughly cleaned the filter. Any suggestions on what could cause this? Obviously I keep leaning towards replace the oilbath filter but good luck with that right? I'm lost and I really want to start driving it again. Any help is appreciated.

Hello and welcome to the forums!
I would aim at two possible sources for your troubles. First, you should be able to remove your air cleaner element and wash it in a cleaning solution then re-oil and replace and see if that changes anything. if you can reasonably determine the element is not clogged go back to the carb. what did you set the float at? this will determine the overall mixture level across a few circuits. Any other ways you can see inside the carb via a component not sealed that could be leaking fuel into the air side? In some way it sound like your leaning to the rich side of calibration and when the air cleaner is installed you push it over the threshold of running properly with a minor air restriction. So either air blockage or over fueling in some circuit of the carb.

Re: Issues with a carter yf looking for advice
Thanks for the advice 1972hiboy. I haven't got it yet but you defiantly got me started on a different path than before. I couldn't find anything other than "float should be level to the bowl when closed" it's a very basic carb. And I'm a very basic shade tree guy. I did find that both the needle and needle seat in the rebuild kit from summit were shorter. And the flit was hitting the body and not full closing it. Just changed them back to the old ones and eating we will see what happens next. Did I miss something with this carb?
And as for taking that element out I can't find a way without tearing it apart and not being able to get it back together.

Ok so I still don't have it. Can't even get the thing to start now! With or without the filter. Anyone got a fuel injected system for these things?

Good morning Joe. The float has specs for the amount of "drop" to let fuel in and the amount of "rise" to shut the needle to seat. these specs are important and the float being set to these is also important. Its kinda sounding like this carb should be removed off the truck, torn down. cleaned, blown out, re-measured, and new kit installed and go from there.
