Holley carburetor 4160 600cfm fuel economy

Post by Pat Crash »

I am making some upgrades to my 360 to primarily improve upon heat soak issues, and secondarily fuel economy. I have decided on an Edelbrock Performer 390 (2105 - https://www.summitracing.com/parts/edl-2105 ) and to put on a Holley. I use my truck for basic transportation, going to the dump, and hauling supplies - basically a work truck. I care more about torque than speed. And after 7 years with this truck, I understand not to hold my breath when it comes to getting better mileage, so my expectations are low in regards to that, but still want to try my best. I have installed a new radiator, water pump, fuel pump, blown out my fuel lines and insulated them.

Any input on the following:

1) I've seen a lot of recommendations for Holley's 4160 600cfm. I am eyeing Model 0-80453 with electric choke https://www.summitracing.com/parts/hly-0-80453 (instead of the 0-1850c - https://www.summitracing.com/parts/hly-0-1850c) as I already have an electric choke setup on current Autolite 2100. Is this 600cfm carburetor too much for my goal? Also, I see that you can purchase a electric choke conversion for the 0-1850c, so wondering if anyone likes that carb better than the 0-80453. If you don't like either, any other Holley recommendations that you would suggest. Any issues with connecting either up with pretty much stock linkage and vacuum ports?

2) I am going to be putting on a 2" phenolic spacer (Edelbrock Carburetor Spacer 8713 - https://www.summitracing.com/parts/edl-8713 ) to help as much as possible with heat soak. Is that too thick?

Well, it's not a Holley, but my truck came with the Edelbrock 4BBL carb. It's the 1405, which has a manual choke, but I think it's 600CFM as well. Originally, it was jetted for performance, so it got ~7.5MPG. I leaned it out with their jet kit, and now get ~9.5MPG. This is on a 352 with the Ford 4BBL iron intake. Everything else is pretty much stock. So, some similarities, and a lot of differences. I think the only way to improve mileage for me is to swap out the 4.10 rear for a 3.54.
