Backing plate gaskets

Post by massillon preacher »

I have seen some say drum backing plate gaskets don't really need to be replaced, what is the deal here, do they need to replaced or not?

Ford didn't put them in there for no reason. Replace them, Napa has them or you can make them easily enough. A bead of permatex would work also.

The purpose of the backing plate gaskets is to keep the fine particles of (abrasive) brake dust from getting into the axle bearings, which would shorten the bearing life of them.

Okay so I have looked and NPD and Napa show them but they both show 2 or 3 of them, as I took out the axle there are 2 gaskets per each side, how do I know which one from napa or npd to get and are they the same for both gaskets on each side, can't find a thing to tell me for sure?
