Broken Exhaust Bolt

Any suggestions to remove broken bolts with no access to an acetylene torch or removing the heads

Go get some good sharp drill bits... then patience. Some weld nuts then extractors and all. I am guilty of just going old school and drilling them out. Might have to pull a inner fender for access though or have a right angle drill. :2cents: I am guessing FE 360-390 top flange bolts.

Nailed it, 390 top bolts on the exhaust

How many ?
If just one I've seen people put a clamp on it.
Crude but effective.

One of my recent projects, when I bought it, had several broken bolts in the top flanges on a 360. I decided it was the perfect opportunity to pull the heads, get them re-done, and put it all back together with a new set of hookers.

Sometimes that's easier than spending hours on end trying to fish out a broken piece of ancient metal out, while installed in the truck.

Make sure they are flat (die grinder helps.) the above post for sharp drill bit is right on. Definitely center punch the bolts to keep the bit from walking. Even if you ruin the threads in the head, a nut on the back side will do the trick.

That would be my last resort, wife is already tapping her toes at how long it's taken to replace a "gasket" :cuss:

It's a good thing I already had the column out to be replaced, looks like I might have to drop the master cylinder too

If so, have a machine shop mill them flat (true), and then don't use a gasket..

The stock manifold is shot, cracked right in half

Pop the lower radiator hose off
4 plug wires
5 valve cover bolts
4 rocker shaft bolts
2 exhaust bolts
5 intake bolts
10 head bolts

The head can be removed in less than an hour

How do you get a good seal on the manifold?

One down and the worst possible thing happened on the second. Had a good grip with the easy out and it snapped off inside the bolt :cuss: Now I am slowly trying to drill out the easy out ugh

Has that worked for you? I've always used a gasket even if I had them machined - just did it to the '68 because it had a leak on #3 and put new Fel-Pro gaskets - afraid it would leak if I didn't........ :eek:
