YFA Carb tuning help needed.

Post by stldesign »

YFA Carb tuning help needed.

Bone stock strait 6 (240) manual trans and heat controlled (non electric) choke

This is on a good running truck. I noticed the seals on the carb were leaking so I rebuilt it.

It will start only with starting fluid.

Once it warms up and choke kicks off it dies.

I'm dumb when it come to tuning carbs.

Help needed THANKS!!! -MIKE-

I am not a carburetor expert, but I have some ideas to try. First of all, can you rule out fuel pump and clogged filter? It is always best to start with the simple things.

If it needs starting fluid to start, perhaps the accelerator pump doesn't work. Rotate the throttle linkage, see if it squirts small jets of fuel into the throat of the carburetor.

Did you adjust the mix screw(s) and idle adjuster screw to the correct initial positions?

Are vacuum lines, if any, attached, not leaking, and unused vacuum ports blocked off?

Did you replace the float? It might pay to take the top off to ascertain that there is fuel in the bowl and that the float is indeed floating.

If it's been sitting for awhile or using ethanol gas, sounds like the accelerator diaphragm is shot--pretty common for my old vehicles. I rebuilt a dozen carbs before I switched gasoline.

Full carb rebuild, and strive to never, ever use gasoline with ethanol.
too many Fords, no where near 'nuff time.

or, money.

The carb is newly rebuilt but ill check that fuel is squirting into carb.
I'm guessing it does because it runs for 2 minutes or so until choke kicks off.

When i put adjustment screws back in i counted the number of turns when I took them out.

I'll let you know what happens.

Vacuum leak, so you're running too lean? I didn't think so, until your post about it running with the choke. How many turns out on your idle screws?

When I started my bump this spring, it did the same thing. Turns out that one of the vacuum ports on the carb was open. I capped it last year, but the rubber cap cracked and fell off. I capped it with a vinyl one, and that fixed it.
