HELP!! Throttle Linkage Issue

Post by Flightman91 »

Hey guys,

I just put a Holley 4 barrel on my 390, and the throttle rod is about 3 inches to short. I checked the thread size and is a 12-24. I know lots of people have done this. I need a cheap fix. Please help.

Or all-thread and a couple of heim joints. That's what I did for my Edelbrock. I was able to do a direct connection to my throttle pedal, and got rid of that trapeze monstrosity that Ford used.

Honestly, the original rod doesn't really fit in the hole on the carb. I think I'm gonna try my hand at a bit of machining, make a 12-24 to 1/4-20 adapter. We'll see how that goes....

That's one of the reasons I went with heim joints. I was able to find a small bolt that fit both the carb and the heim joint. You can probably find photos on google. It works for my truck, but every truck is unique in certain respects. Some people don't like the direct connect between the pedal and the carb.

An easy fix for this is a boneyard part. I had several of them a few years back.
Look on the dents for the offset rod linkage that hooks right up.

I can't use that little nut in my carb though it doesn't fit.

I have a few of the smaller ball type linkage's that only require about a 12/32" hole to mount into the car linkeage.
Are you able to use one of them?

I don't think it's that big, I think it's either 1/4 or maybe 5/16.

Several different companies sell the new ball kits as well as the hard linkage rods, (adjustable).

So I cheated, I ended up JB Welding a piece on 1/4-20 rod into my old throttle linkage. Then a bolt to the side of that. It's not pretty but it works. I'll post a pic later.

If it works and you like it, good for you. I would be concerned that vibration will cause the JB joint to break.

My truck came with a length of coat hanger wire between the accelerator pedal linkage and the carburetor, absent the stock "trapeze" linkage. I ran it like that for several years but never liked it, and I knew that it would eventually break.

I recently replaced it with a piece of 1/4 inch rod, cut down to size, threaded and with heim fittings on both ends. The heim fitting was attached to the accelerator linkage with a small nut and bolt, and for the carburetor end I cut down some metal bushings to fill the space between the bolt and the inside of the hole in the carburetor linkage. I used blue thread locker on all threaded joints.

It looks good, works well, and is much more durable than the rusty piece of coat hanger that preceded it.
