Carb spacer

Is the carb spacer supposed to be installed like the picture below; open side up? And solid smooth side down?

I was getting a terrible idle, hesitation and misfires under load with a brand new 2100 carb. I put the holley 4bbl back on with the adapter plate and the truck runs awesome now. After further inspection, the open gaps seem to match the base of the carb, not the intake so my gut tells me my problem was the spacer was in upside down. Am I right? If so then yeah, I'm an idiot that just learned a simple thing the hard way.

Yes your picture is of the bottom side which goes towards the intake manifold.
1967 F-100 4x4 custom cab.
Another 67 F-100 4x4 custom cab.
2016 F-150 Eco-Boost 2.7 liter. (It will smoke the tires!)

Hmm. Ok, I'm not an idiot then. I just got a bad carb. Or the spacer may not be for the 302. I pulled it from a junkyard from a 77 F250. I dont know what engine it was but i know It wasn't a 302 or 351w. I'm not familiar with Fords and it's hard unmolesting what previous owners did. Thanks.

It really shouldn't matter what displacement the engine is. I've swapped these spacers between 351 and 390 with no issues whatsoever. As long as it's a 2-Bbl manifold and a 2-Bbl carb that was available on a Ford, you should be okay. The Autolite 2100 certainly was. Just make sure the gaskets cover all areas of a possible vacuum leak.

Actually, this was my first thought as well. If you forgot the gaskets, then you could definitely be having vacuum leaks, which could affect anything.
