460 with 390 motor mounts
I am trying to put a 460 in my truck. I can't find the proper mounts and stands . I've been told you can take 390 Galaxy motor mounts turn them upside down and switch sides and they will fit the 460. Two different people have told me this but one says i need smallblock engine stands and the other says i need 390 engine stands. Has anyone done this and can verify which one works.

Re: 460 with 390 motor mounts
^BUMP^ I too am considering putting a 460 into my 1970 250 that originally had a 390, but at some point the PO put in a 351W. What will I need to do for preparation?

Re: 460 with 390 motor mounts
I believe the stands are ok, you need the 77-79 460 truck motor mounts, center bump oil pan with proper sump, center pull dip stick, truck exhaust manifolds , especially for the RH side, transmission from a 351m, 400, 429 or 460. The engine will still end up offset to the RH side by about 1 1/2 inch as this is stock for a 360/390 to clear the brake booster.
You can use a E4OD auto overdrive if you want to buy a transmission controller but it would be a cool ride and save on petrol especially if your running a 3.73 or taller gear(s) as this setup will work in a 4WD as well with some transmission, transfer case mount and drive shaft adjustments.
Anything can be done if you got the bread!

Re: 460 with 390 motor mounts
I put a 73 429 from a T-Bird in my 72 shortbed. I used 390 frame perches, and motor mounts. Had to drill out the mount a little to get the top motor mount bolt in the block.

Re: 460 with 390 motor mounts
Be careful if you're using 390 motor mounts. 460s have more torque than 390s and use captured style motor mounts. 390s do not. If you have your foot in the gas and the left motor mount breaks, the left side of the motor will lift and cause the carb linkage to keep the throttle wide open.
You may want to install a safety chain or cable from the block to the frame to prevent motor lift if a mount fails.

Re: 460 with 390 motor mounts
Thanks Bobby never thought about them having those caged mounts. When I got the 429 it did not have any mounts on it. The guy that sold it to me told me how he put it in his truck.BobbyFord wrote:Be careful if you're using 390 motor mounts. 460s have more torque than 390s and use captured style motor mounts. 390s do not. Neighbors '70 F250 2wd has a 460 in it from the previous owner. Frame perches look original and the mounts look like the FE mounts that were used for the 360/390.
I can take a picture and see if I can post it here in the next few days.

Well that went well.MadMike wrote: I can take a picture and see if I can post it here in the next few days.
Couldn't get a proper angle/lighting with my camera, and then I forgot about it. The mounts on the 460 appear to be the 360/390 mounts, lots of grunge grime so I couldn't get a detailed pic. They also appear to be actual Ford mounds as they have Ovaled Ford cast in the rubber, if I can get that area cleaned up and see if there is a part number on the mount I'll post back here.
FWIW, the mounts look like this. Dunno if the left mount is on the left or if it is on the right. But its on the original 360(AFAIK) engine frame bracket/towers.

Re: 460 with 390 motor mounts
Check out http://www.landlproducts.com They have been doing this forever. Yes they cost but My friend Ron has three trucks that have had 460's for 10-15 years. No issues no problems and swears by them.
Just another Ford fool named Dan.

Re: 460 with 390 motor mounts
I went from a 360 to a 460 in my 72 F250, wish I had kept the original motor. I was getting 13 mpg with the 360, I now get 10 mpg with the 460. To make the conversion I bought a F150 out of a 1977. I bought the whole truck and had access to all parts needed for the conversion
Good luck with the conversion
