Looking for opinions on fuel tanks

Post by RandyP63 »

The fuel tank on my 70 short bed F100 decided to leak, so time to replace. I have read a large number of installs here on the site, and I'm trying to decide between the Mustang setup, or the LMC 17 gallon unit. I do not have a welder, so I would have to farm out the fabrication of a 1' square tubing frame, my thought is to choose the LMC unit, but only the tank and straps, the whole kit is expensive. Thanks.

Hi,

This is what I put under my 1970 F250 4x4.

https://www.amazon.com/Scout-Gas-Tank-E ... B003T05DX2

It goes between the frame rails behind the rear axle. The Sending unit works with Ford gas gauges.

If memory serves me, the frame rail width on my F250 4x4 is narrower than 2x4 trucks so this tank should easily fit.

You can also get this tank in a 30gal size.

Hope this helps,
Lee

Thanks, it does help. It will probably come down to cost, not crazy about cutting the bed floor, it looks like I will route it through the side. Thanks again.

I used the optional aux tank that goes under the driver's side of the cab and bed.

The tank can still be bought new and the hanger parts are readily available with a bit of scrounging.

The mustang tank, (raft of rear axle between frame rails) is the way to go, (if you don't mind fueling via the bed). :2cents:

I decided to go with the Mustang tank, I have it coming tomorrow. The only problem will be making a patch for the old fill area. The last two weeks have had a ton of progress. Thanks for the replies, the site has helped a lot.

I did the mustang tank, i left the filler neck in the truck so it still all looks original. The only two problems i had is that the back bumper want go on anymore because i cant get to two of the bolts and the bed is missing two bolts.
