What transmission can I run on 67 f100
Can anyone answer a few questions for me I have a 67 f100 with a 302 with a little work on it. But I am having trouble with my transmission. My setup is 302 mild cam 9 inch rearend with c4 with shift kit and I am reving out way to soon and can only do 60 on the hiway. Any recommendations on what rearend gears I need to swap to in order to get the best performance from my engine.
Should I swap the trans to c6 or newer trans ? What trans is the easiest swap ? Rearend is 373 gears

3.73? Don't recall that ratio for a Ford 9. A 3.70 is more typical.
Anyhoots, what do you mean by performance of the engine? How do you use the truck? Or how do you want to use it???
IMO, a 302 with 3.50 rear gears is decent for a shortbed and light hauler. However, it's a bit underpowered for a long bed that tows or hauls loads.
If you're review out too soon, then swap to numerically lower gears... 3.50 or 3.25.

Keep your gears and install an overdrive transmission.

That's what I wanted to do. But I just completed the whole build and didn't want to be making major changes to the truck do you know what transmission would bolt right up and not alot of changes needed. I read that se of these might work but not sure which is the simplest C6, 4r70w ,fmx, aod. Not sure which is better and don't involve lots of moving mounts and cutting drive shafts etc..

Re: What transmission can I run on 67 f100
I guess it's somewhat a matter of perspective what's simplest. I'm more interested in what's the best choice. For me, that's the '98 4R70W I'm rebuilding to put in my '69 F100. My current engine is the stock 240 inline six but, I have a '90 Mustang 5.0L EFI engine or a '73 351W I could fuel inject. Whichever one of these engines I install, the 4R70W will be going behind it.

A C6 or FMX won't drop your engine RPM any lower than the C4. Your engine RPM would still be the same in D on the highway. You would need an OD trans like the AOD or 4R70W to drop your highway engine revs or keep your C4 and change the rear end gear ratio. I have a manual trans with a 3.54 rear and my engine revs aren't excessive in direct drive (3rd gear) at highway speeds.

Taller tires would help a little.

AOD is a really poor design... I'd drop in some 3.25's or even 3.00's and leave the trans alone before going AOD.

Re: What transmission can I run on 67 f100
The AOD in stock form is a bit lack luster but, with some good clutch discs and a shift kit, the AOD can be made into a good transmission.
The AOD first came out in 1980. However, there were several design flaws to it that Ford didn't address until 1988. So, if you're going to run an AOD, the best versions to get would be from 1988-1993. V-8 versions will have more clutch discs in them than ones behind a six cylinder.
The AODE (electronically-shifted) is the 2nd generation revision of the AOD. The 4R70W (electronically-shifted) is the 3rd generation revision of the AOD. This transmission (4R70W) has way more capabilities over the older AOD.

You shouldn't have any problem going 60 with a 3.70ish rear and a v8. Is everything working correctly?
