Sanderson shorty headers and stock dipstick

Post by Ron_Hall »

A quick note: I have read that you cannot use the stock dipstick with Sanderson shorty headers on a 390fe and noticed a few of the guys here are running them, so, what are the option?

Thanks
Ron

Might try to get in touch with Pincheweddo. http://www.1967f100.com/2013/09/and-win ... erson.html He put Sanderson shorties on his 351w build and the dipstick looks like a good fit.

The dipstick still bolts on with the front bottom exhaust bolt

Why would the stock dipstick not work

I had read it a couple places that the Sandersons interfered somehow. I wonder if they where talking about 4x4's.. :?

Thanks for the input!!

I have read that they may interfere for the 4x4 as well. That's why I haven't purchased them for myself. Shipping is expensive to Alaska.

i have a 390fe in my f350 running a 4x4 rear sump pan. all i had to do when installing the sanderson headers was add a slight "s" curve into the dipstick tube and bend the exhaust bolt tab back accordingly to make the dipstick work... stick functions fine for me but not 100% sure the dipstick tube is stock as the pan was changed at some point to the rear sump so guessing the dipstick was changed to 4x4 dipstick at the same time but not certain.

Image

here is the dipstick before sandersons went on. comes up pretty straight right in front of #6
bent it to curve toward the front of the engine and come up between #5 and #6
havent uploaded my finished pictures yet but will try to shortly. hope this helps.

I have Sanderson shorties on my 68 CS 390. had no problems with the stock dipstick n tube. May have had to tweak the tube a hair but it works fine :hmm:

I see many people using the Sandersons (ff427), but does anyone run them on a 4x4? I have a '68 f-100 4X4 W/360. Stock manifolds are long gone by previous owner and the current headers have seen better days. Honestly, the entire exhaust needs to be replaced. Anyways, I think they are currently headman long tubes, but that's based on pictures. I would like to go with shorties. I do not have a cherry picker and labor in Alaska is $$$$$$.

I know that there may be a question with the starter being in the way, but I can swap that. I'm really more concerned with the transfer case and how it's in the way. That's why I would like to go with shorties too.

They'll work and provide more flexibility than routing from long tubes. I'd run a crossover and route both tubes down the right frame rail for dual exhaust. Alternatively, merge the 2.5 inch tubing into a single 3-inch tube to a single free-flowing muffler.

In terms of the starter, the headers will clear the nose of the starter by 0.125 of an inch. The starter won't be trapped in place and can be removed without unbolting the header.

I am going to finally order the sanderson FF427. Will i need to get a down pipe, or am i looking at a full custom until i get past the crossmember on my '68 F100 4x4 with a 360? Specs list a 3 inch collector.

Summit now sells polished 304 stainless J bends for not much more than standard 409 stainless. I'm going full custom with polished on my next build. Did a stack on a IH 656 with a Cummins swap and it turned out nice.
