Alternator Questions

Post by Subzero »

I'm trying to buy an aftermarket alternator but I've noticed that it's not all that simple as just picking the color you like  . These trucks have an external regulator? Would an internal regulator work still? If I have to buy another alternator i should probably buy the voltage regulator that goes on the radiator support too. I'll be running a modern stereo, high torque starter, optima red top and replacing all my big power cables that are dry rot.

Have you read the 3G install thread? Lot of good information there. http://www.fordification.com/forum/view ... =8&t=13062 These guys also have a good rep https://www.dbelectrical.com/products/a ... 94-97.html This one is a Ford aftermarket replacement and internally regulated. If you stay with V-belts you have to swap the pulley.

If you're not absolutely sure of what you're doing, go to a Napa or Carquest. Take your old alternator with you.
The most difficult part of this is 'indexing' the new alternator and installing your old sheave. A nice, knowledgeable person working there will show you how. And you will learn something new. Heck, they'll probably do it for you for free. If they like you.
A stock alternator is something like 60 amps. Most people want more power. So they can listen to the wisdom of Snoop Dog on their big, loud stereo.
The voltage regulator is mounted on the passenger side radiator support. Sometimes they last forever, sometimes they don't. Buy a spare. They're cheap.

The 3G looks pretty in depth for what I'm trying to do now with everything else going on, is there a more powerful stock alternator on the market? I just bought a new voltage regulator too off eBay.

Rockauto lists a 90 Amp for our trucks http://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php ... 21&jsn=421 and if you reach a little farther into the future, a 100 Amp for the 1974 Gran Torino which is a similar case http://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php ... 94&jsn=572 Both should be pretty much a bolt in upgrade. You might want to consider installing a couple of relays to take some of the juice out of the OE wiring harness and pull directly from the battery. That will lower your overall demand on the harness. Our wiring was never intended to handle 100 Amp demands.

Ditto , mixed feelings on the upgrade. Run the wipers, blower motor on high and headlights and see what your running voltage is at idle. That's about the largest realistic load you'll need on a rainy night in the truck. Stereos that fit in our trucks just don't draw a huge amount of power.

I think very few alternators are run to a full amp load. The voltage regulator typically won't push them hard enough.

Found a Powermaster with a 75 amp rating, maybe that'd be a good middle ground? That way it more power than a 60 amp but still won't cause too much overload on the original wiring. I'm not too good at wiring, especially complex to change everything over to a relay.

Sure, the PowerMaster will work. I was intimidated by relays until I installed my first one. Now I want to put them everywhere!

FWIW I ran a modern stereo with several speakers in my old '74 with a stock alternator (65 amps I think?). It could handle wipers, lights, heater full blast, and still crank out some tunes with no problems :2cents:

The only reason I'm worried about this one might be irrational anyway- I have a 1989 F150 with an aftermarket sound system and only two things can be run at a time: headlights, ac, wipers, radio, or other accessories. It can do it but power is somewhere around 8 volts  . This 1972 will have less draw on it but since I want to make everything new anyhow I figure I'll get a nice alternator up front 8)

This is the one I bought- I hope it works out okay

I'm not quite sure on that one, will have to see when it arrives tomorrow. If it does and won't line up I'll have to reuse my old pully. This is the last part I had to buy for me engine so I'm very happy,I replaced everything but the actual core distributor and power steering pump. Took me months to get it all but she'll sure be nice when it drives out of the shop a

Update: the pulley I recieved is a single V-belt so it's a perfect match with more Amps than original
