I'm in the middle of a rebuild from a '66 352FE that I found on craigslist a few years ago. I'm almost to the point of putting on the harmonic balancer, so I pulled out the original from one of my boxes 'o parts. I noticed that it is much thinner than others I have seen. The "meat" of the balancer is maybe 1/4" thick. It does have a single groove cast into it, which makes the overall thickness maybe 1", but I thought that the balancers were much thicker.
Did Ford change them over time, or change for the bigger engines? Can I reuse this, or should I replace it? The cost of a new balancer isn't going to cause me to refinance the mortgage, but if I can keep the original iron on the road, I'd prefer to go this route. Anybody know what I'm talking about?

Re: Harmonic Balancer Question
Yup. Mine's the same way. With an integral sheave. You can read of my problem, concern, and solution by looking up 'mystery vibration' or 'harmonic balancer' in the search engine.

Re: Harmonic Balancer Question
Dampner is the correct terminology
Yes you may reuse it
You may also use one off of any other FE ford as they are all neutral balanced
You may need to watch out for a misalignment between the water pump and any accessories if you change to a later model dampner.
