I don't like automatic transmissions. Never have. Unless I have trouble with my left leg or my right arm. Which almost never happens.
I've known for a long time that one does not simply pour any ATF into any automatic transmission.
I've heard somewhere that older automatic transmissions that have been rebuilt after a certain year have a different friction material in the clutches to make them more compatible with modern fluids.
Here's the facts regarding my situation:
To the best of my ability, I have determined I have a Cruiseomatic.
I have a receipt showing the trans was rebuilt in 2-'94.
The dipstick has been cut and modified so that some information has been removed. It reads as follows:
(information cut away)ON II AUTO TRANS FLUID ONLY 1257013 M.
What ATF should I use?
What ATF to use in Cruiseomatic?

If a post-80 trans and it has been rebuilt, I suggest Dexron II.

Pre 78 or 79 C6's used type F trans fluid. I believe the FMX trans used it as well. That's most likely what your trans uses unless they changed the internals.

Re: What ATF to use in Cruiseomatic?
Here's more info I should've added to the original post:
According to the numbers on the trans, which I have researched, it is meant to be attached to a '67 with a 352.
As mentioned before, the trans was rebuilt in 1994.
Would ATF labeled Dexron III/Mercon likely be OK?

My '64 Fairlane has a Cruise-O-Matic and uses Type F only. If the transmission was rebuilt to the original specs with original style parts, then nothing but Type F.

You can run what you want. Type 'F' was the spec back in the day. WalMart still carries it. I think it has different friction modifiers in it vs the new stuff.

Re: What ATF to use in Cruiseomatic?
Dexron allows for more clutch pack slippage. Type F is the more "grabby" fluid. You will never notice the difference with a stock truck/stock trans.
