Rag joint removal

Post by qmcdugan »

I was reading another thread on the subject, but don't know what bolts hold the steering column in place, that would permit the 1&1/2 pull into the cab. Thereby permitting the removal of the rag joint.

There is a clamp on the firewall bracket and two bolts under the dash under the column that should do the trick. Of course you have to undo the tag joint.

The clamp is the one in the engine compartment ? And if I understand what you mean, there are two bolts holding a support bracket in the cab that need to be loosened. Correct ?

Yes inside the cab are the two bolts the support the column, you can see one here. Image

The clamp you find on that bracket in the engine bay. It'll be under the master cylinder.

Found em. Hopefully I'll get the little bit of movement I need, so the new steering gear install will go easier.

It's a real labor of LOVE, AIN'T IT ? :x

Here is what it took. Not too bad. I found it a bit intimidating on first check because I expected simple.

Rag Joint Removal & Replacement see the diagram at this site.

Tools needed: Part Description Part number

1. 7/16" 12 point Steering column coupling 3A525
socket Clamp bolt 358794

2. 1/2" socket Steering column coupling 3A525
to steering shaft bolt 375799

3. 9/16" socket Exterior Firewall Bracket 3668
Clamp bolt 23410

4. 1/2" socket Exterior Firewall Bracket 3668
Retaining bolt 20346

5. 3/8" socket Interior Firewall Bracket 38633
Retaining bolt 31528

6. 1/2" socket Steering column support 3678
Retaining bolt 379193

With all bolts / screws removed pull steering wheel back and rest it on drivers seat. Remove the Rag Joint and to keep the rag joint together, reinstall nuts to rag joint bolts.
