Tailpipe Suggestions

Hope to have the motor back in the 72' by the end of the month. Then off to get new exhaust. Looking for suggestions on how to run the tailpipes. I'm not real crazy about running the pipes straight out the back. Would love to see some pics of what you guys have done. I've considered just running turn downs right in front or behind the rear axle.

I like tucking them up behind the bumper so they dont show as much.
that gets the noise and fumes futher from the cab.

Run them out the back or turned out on each side of the rear bumper. Placing the turndowns in front of the rear axle will drive you crazy from the humm. And it also makes your truck sound like everyone else's. It also places heat on the rear housing which over time creates condensation in the housing and that plain and simple means inner corrosion which you won't see until the gears start to "sing" to you and the pinion bearings growl like a mad dog. I put steel big truck mufflers on my big block FE's, 2 inch in, 1 7/8 inch out, bent around the rear axels then out on each side of the rear bumper and they all sounded real good! Bring your inlets to just behind the cab, install the mufflers then build back from there.

Exit either in front or behind rear tires, with a 45 degree back-cut on the pipe for efficiency and MPG. No fancy tips.

Yep that big bend up and over the rear axle robs a lot of power IMO.

I'd do it in mandrel bent stainless 409. Exhaust shops are a horrible rip off. Summit racing for the J bends, cut them to the correct angles, sand them flat on a belt sander and buzz them together, either mig or tig.

Here's a shot of my '68 Ranchero's 3" stainless dairy pipe exhaust with Magnaflow mufflers. Surprisingly quiet until you nail it. Notice the header collector flange so the back will unbolt from the muffler to ease removal for other work.


Edited to add that I do recommend going all the way back. Too much of a chance for bad gasses to get into the cab and hurt you with a short exhaust on a long trip.

It´s complete in 2 1/2" with Raptor muffler. Sound iss good, not to loud

Id like to have them come out behind the tires. But tucked up high then turn down. Where you just see the tip poking downward a couple inches below the sheet metal. If that makes sense. But I think the leaf springs will be in the way. Especially when lowered
