T5 vs M5R2

Post by Slacker809 »

Which is an easier swap for my 1969 with a 351W and a t-18 in it now? I think I want to go with hydraulic clutch either way I go. I like the feel better. My truck is just going to be a daily driver/cruiser not pulling anything or drag racing.

What vehicles do I need to look for for each transmission?

ive been researching and collecting parts for a T5 swop in my 68. so I know more about the T5 then the m5r2. but I do have the m5r2 in my 95 f150. both are great transmissions. but if youre sure youre not going to pull or haul much id go WC T5,(even though it can handle towing cause its engineered to handle torque) for many reasons make sure to go World Class. the T5 will be a smoother sporty shift.

the M5R2 is a well tested truck trans through and through. so it makes sense its the choice for hauling and towing. though its good on the hwy and easy enough to shift for in town driving. better then the t18 for sure. it has a long shift range. youll be spending most of your time taking it the distance between one gear to another lol

both are probably equally as easy to install on our trucks. so I guess its just up to your preference.

I personally want the T5

The t5 is super easy. You can get an adapter that goes between the trans and bellhousing and use your original clutch and bellhousing . I did this with a three speed truck i guess the four speed bellhousing would work also

The M5R2 is very abundant, was used from around 1987-1996 behind 3006cyl , 302, and 351W. We installed one from a 90 model into a 69 a couple years ago . was pretty straight forward. My son has been driving now for 1 1/2 years he loves it. this is from another thread I posted on regards to the same question.

We installed 5 speed from a "90 model F150 into a '69 f100 with 3.70 gears. We are running 33" tires and it drives great. Very easy to install. Modified the cross member from the '90 to work on my frame, Had to have '90 drive shaft shortened and relocate the carrier bearing. I have pics of how we did the clutch pedal / Slave cylinder mod. We really like the setup pulls good and cruises nice. they are very easy to locate.

One plus for the M5odr2 is it's ratios 3.91-2.24-1.49-1-.80 to me they are ideal for a street truck reverse and first are a bit high for a off road truck but on the street the "lower' first will be handy on take off... :2cents:
The main shaft uses tapered roller bearings and the gears are good sized and there are steel liners cast into the case where the bearings ride.

I would go with the M5R2. They are plentiful and cheap. And as long as you do not run them out of oil (change the rubber plugs for steel plugs to avoid this problem) they are near bulletproof.

The only time I sell parts for them is when someone lets them run low on oil. When that happens 3rd/4th shift fork wears (available after market) and/or input/cluster fail (available good used.) Occasionally the top cover fails when the driver keeps slamming gears.
