Transmission swap

Post by Bewell15 »

Hi all, I am a bit new to this so here we go. I just got a 1969 f-250 4x4 with a Dana 24 and a np435. The problem is the motors dead. Because of that I need a new motor and was wandering A.) what motors bolt up to that transmission and B.) can I somewhat easily swap in a five speed from a later truck?

Easily ? Hmmm.

For a 4x4, the leading option is a ZF5 or an NV4500.

I'm in the middle of installing a 351W and ZF-5 in my 67. Still in mockup, but it's coming along. I had to lower the motor 1.5 inches, since the small block wasn't offered in the 4x4. Oh, and the transfer case on the ZF is HUGE, so I had to notch the frame in a spot.

With the divorced T case you have a lot of options the intermediate shaft is ~30" long an the shortest you can easily go is ~11" with a drive line with a slip joint in it or ~6.5" if it's a slip yoke trans as any shorter and you can't slip it in without moving either trans/engine or T case.
Any 2WD trans can work with the correct intermediate shaft a local drive line shop should do one for $300.00
I started with the M5odr2 behind the 4BT but towing too much killed it so now I'm running the ZF5 both fit easily but each took a different shaft I also fit a 302 rangebox in the space so depending on what engine you choose will dictate what are the easiest, best and most cost effective but I would want a 5 speed with 5th OD and a 1st of at least 5.5-1 so if its an FE the nv4500 would be "fairly" easy to do but there are Np540 that have a OD but they are hard to find. If you run a small block a ZF-5 can be had with that bolt pattern if a 429/460 a ZF-5 with that bolt pattern is available then there are the 5 speed competition transmissions.............. :2cents:

For a LOT of information on the nv4500 go to www.high impact.net/nv4500. I've put one behind my 2we 390 but have yet to get it out on the road. (My fault, I'm slow.) It's a favorite of the 4wd community which has driven the price up here in California.
