Pitman Arm Question?

Post by JWW »

I'm in the process of putting my pitman arm back on the steering box. I'm running into an issue with the arm not going up on the spines all the way. The arm lined up properly and I got it started, but now it has ceased tightening. I have used my impact wrench with no luck. I'm trying my torque wrench at 150lbs, but I'm not strong enough there either. I've tried applying a little grease as well.

Any suggestions? Below is how much gap I have:

Hmmm
So the teeth are lined up?
Did u change pitman arms?

I impacted mine on and it worked.

Not sure but maybe try greasing it up and try again.

Thanks. I got the box and arm from a 79' model. I did exchange the box as a core for a refurbished unit. The arm lined right up to begin with. Based on what I have reviewed, I have not put the arm on backwards. It is possible by impact wrench is shot and not working properly.

I may see if I can get access to a different impact wrench and try that.

Does the pitman arm move the drag link? Ergo Does it steer? It could be on well enough. I googled some pics and there is a gap like you've got but just not as big. I personally would remove it and inspect it before doing anything else. The pitman arm or the gear box teeth could be stripped. Or the new gear box has the wrong spline. Or one could have teeth and the other smooth.

So many possibilities, remove it and take some pics

Thanks for the response. I appreciate the help. I'll see what I can get done over the next week or so.
