Transmission ID

Post by willowbilly3 »

OK, I'm a stick shift guy so help me out. How do I tell what tranny I have. I originally thought it was a C6 but after I got it out from under the bench, I think it might be an FMX. How do you tell? I haven't rolled it over to ID the pan but it has some ribs on top and I think the pan has a notch out of one corner.

Sounds like a C-6 to me....some of those had those ribs, and also have a notch in the pan:

Does it have a cast-iron or aluminum case? All C-6 trannys have the aluminum case, whereas the FMX is cast-iron. ALso, the C6 case is all one piece....whereas the FMX and C-4 have removeable bellhousings.

All aluminum case with integrated bell housing, so it must be a C6. For some reason those ribs made me think FMX.

I tried to find a pic of a case with ribs, but I couldn't. Some C6 trannies have 5 or 6 small ribs where the bellhousing and main case sections would meet, right on top, if they were separate pieces. I've had one of those in the past. I know that some folks have had to grind those down for tranny tunnel clearance when swapping those C6's into Mustangs or Fairlanes.

I just found these on E-bay and edited them a bit to illustrate the ribs. Not the best angle, but at least you get the visual:
