re: Cruise-O-Matic question.
That's kind of a loaded question because the marketing group at Ford referred to all their automatics as Cruise-O-Matics.
But generally speaking, the Cruise-O-Matic is associated with the cast iron 3-speed auto that originated in the '50s. The C4 is the newer design aluminum 3-speed auto for the small blocks and the C6 for the big blocks, generally speaking.

re: Cruise-O-Matic question.
According the 1967 shop manual, we have the MX transmission in our trucks.

re: Cruise-O-Matic question.
FYI: Ford-O-Matic was the first automatic transmission from Ford Motor Company. First introduced in 1950, the Ford-O-Matic evolved into the Cruise-O-Matic in 1958 and the FMX in 1968. This line continued in production until 1980, when the AOD was introduced.
How's that!

re: Cruise-O-Matic question.
The beginnings of the Cruise-O-Matic is interesting. Studebaker developed it in conjunction with Detroit Gear Company and called it the Automatic Drive, which was soon bought out by Borg Warner. Ford needed an automatic and asked Studebaker to share the design. Studebaker said "no" so Ford requested (told) Borg Warner to design a transmission for them. The Borg Warner designed Fordomatic was pretty much the same design as the Automatic Drive but avoiding the Studebaker patents. Declines in Studebaker sales and the higher manufacturing cost made Studebaker switch to the Fordomatic , what irony.

You're right, that IS interesting! Thanks for sharing, Barry and Lawrence. In fact, I think those words would be a couple of excellent opening paragraphs for the automatic transmission ID page, which I'm currently working on.

re: Cruise-O-Matic question.
My Tranny guy called the cruise-o-matic a C3. He asked me if it had a C3 or C6 in it when I had it checked out. I told him I didnt know except it came new with a cruise -o-matic. He said that is a C3. Then he crawled under it and 2 seconds later told me it had a C6 in it.
