something wrong with my grill

Post by blue68 »

After speaking with the original owner of my truck, he told me that at one point about two years before I bought the truck, he had the chrome grill painted satin black. Just a month before I bought the truck, he somehow stripped off the black and it was shiny again. My first thought was that all that paint protected the finish. Now, it seems like the grill is half as shiny as it was when I got it in the summer. And I've been keeping constant wax on it. It just looks a lot cloudier and faded now for some reason.

Any ideas why?

Thanks.
(I'm considering the Lye treatment, but I'm scared about messing something up).

sounds like maybe a waxy build up. you might want to try a chrome polish. maybe a rubbing compound. but i am no expert. so doing any thing i suggest may harm or cause damage to your grill.

Last time I used my grill, I had to use a wire brush on it.

The grille finish was anodized. Sounds like maybe you've got bare aluminum dulling. Try rubbing it with some Mothers mag & aluminum polish, can't hurt.

Kinda sounds to me like the Methylene Chloride that was in the stripper is attacking the anodizing on the grill... making it cloud up, but not strong enough to remove it.

I seem to recall that one of our Brothers posted a thorough clinic on how to restore an aluminium grille.

I'll venture to say that you could find it in the archives...
