Wheel Bearings

Post by Johnm »

Hey All,

So will soon be doing a full brake job on my 1969 f250 and while I was in there I was considering changing out the bearings.
My question is, how often do you replace your bearings, or do most people just wait for something to go wrong. Now I know that many people will say just to replace them anyway, but I'm just curious if inspecting and repacking them would be enough. Do I HAVE to replace the races and bearings if they pass a visual inspection? Again, I know that most people would say just do it anyway, but I dont have a press or race puller. Just looking for some advice.

thanks!

Cleaning and inspection is key, get em clean enough to inspect the inner races while holding up the bearings to bright sunlight. If there is no pitting, rust, scaring etc on either the races or the rollers then by all means repack them with a basic good quality wheel bearing grease and run em.
