IM HAVING COLUMN SWAP PROBLEMS, HELP!!!

Post by Bryan_Tenn »

I have a 72 with a C4 auto on the column with power steering. My column was shot, bearings were all shot & sloppy, so it was hard to find another PS/auto column, but I found one out of a 74 that had the NSS on it & ready to bolt up. I also got some parts from a 72 F350 that I got the power steering box from & used it because I wasnt sure if mine was working properly. All of this was close to a year ago.

Now, fast forward to today & Im getting my interior all together, this column is actually shorter than my original but still too long to go in. And to the best of my recollection, the steering box off the 72 f350 was identical to the one in my 72 f100.

I read all the column swap info on here before getting this column about a year ago, so what could I be doing wrong???

How are your cab mounts? I've read that if they're rusted out it can cause problems with column fitment.

When you say too long to go in, are you talking about where it bolts to the dash? Look at this photo, the middle and the bottom columns. http://www.fordification.com/tech/images/columns.jpg The middle column is a bump side p/s column, the bottom is a dent side p/s column. See the mounting bracket, how the dent side bracket is shorter than the bump side bracket? Does the shorter bracket look like it's causing your issue? The dent side bracket looks to have at least an inch shorter slot.
