67 F100 auto trans linkage issue

Post by ibtallwalt »

Hey guys, I'm trying to pull the steering column out for a rebuild and cannot get the a/t linkage loose from the bottom of the column. I've taken the nut off the top of the linkage connector and soaked it with solution..and put the nut partially back on and tapped it with a small ball peen hammer, and cannot get it to budge. Is it possible that the linkage has to be taken loose from lower down to allow me to unscrew the rod from the block it's attached too????...and then if so, why is there a nut on the top...? Sorry to sound so dumb :? , just not my best subject, but am trying to learn as I go...Thanks for any help.

Well, as it usually goes, if you mess with something long enough, you'll either break it or resolve it...

In this case, I found my stronger glasses, and a good light and mirror and found that there is a horseshoe clip on the back side of the linkage connection to the steering column bracket....and all I need do is remove it and that will release the linkage and allow me to then rotate the steering column and remove i from the truck for the rebuild (well there are a few more bolts and wires to disconnect, too) and move on.

It's all in the adjustment. Start with the column in the neutral position. Manually shift the transmission into neutral. Adjust the linkage at the transmission. You may have to tweak it a time or two to get it exactly where you want it. The most important position to get right is PARK. Don't want her rolling away when you go to get out.

If your cab mounts are compressed or collapsed, you may have a lot of trouble trying to get the linkage adjusted out. On a manual transmission with a three on the tree shifter, it will cause the linkages to get bound up.

Bad mounts will also put a lot of stress on the lower end of the steering column tube that will tear up the lower column bearing.
